A Gospel For America - Introduction

Many Americans were taught that America was most likely named, by a cartographer, after Amerigo Vespucci (Americus, in Latin), through whom Europeans would come to know that Columbus had not found a new route to Asia but a route to, what would be for them, a New World. Few, however, know that the name Amerigo most likely derives from the Old German name Henry (aka Imre), favored name of kings – especially of England and France.

Some scholars believe that Amerigo was named after Saint Emeric of Hungary, aka Prince St. Imre) he is known in Latin as Sanctus Americus after being canonized for his pious life and purity. Images of Emeric often include the symbols of a crown and a lily. A lily symbolizes charity and virtue. A crown symbolizes royalty or divinity, and is sometimes employed to symbolize Christianity.

Interestingly, the name Henry means "home ruler" or "home rule" – and the United States of America was established as a "federal constitutional republic," with a government "of the people, by the people, for the people. (The Gettysburg Address)" Also of interest, America was founded as a Christian nation, without declaring a state religion and tolerant of all authentic religions, as enshrined in her Founding Documents, as inscribed on her monies, as etched in her monuments, as recorded in history, and as confirmed by the Supreme Court.

The facts about the founding of America are still being argued, typically in support of some agenda item, like multi-culturism. Even the facts about the naming of America and her religious heritage are being argued, usually in support of some political, social, or economic agenda.

The point is that in all of history, America is unique - in her founding and in her destiny (potentiality). The Good News for America, from a Catholic perspective, includes the fact that although comprised of weak and sinful humans, nevertheless she is blessed and called to greatness. The foundation for greatness was established in her founding documents - declaring inalienable, God-given Rights and Freedoms, and establishing a government to secure such Rights and Freedoms against the hostile forces of Anarchy and Tyranny - evil forces that, as history records, would make of this world a slave camp, a killing field, and a battleground, often under the guise of a Utopia.

The Good News for America includes more than God-given Rights and Freedoms. The Good News for America includes availability of the direct assistance of God to sanctify her and make of her a moral people. America's Founder knew that only a Moral People could successfully govern themselves and continue to secure their God-given Rights and Freedoms. Indeed, at huge cost America has won great moral victories by throwing off slavery within the United States, repulsing the tyrannical assaults associated with WW I and WWII, resisting the assaults of socialism, communism, and militant Islam, while at the same time progressively securing human rights for all at home and abroad.

Nevertheless, America continues to be attacked by the hostile forces of Anarchy and Tyranny from within and without. The price of Freedom is Vigilance and Defense.

America is not without fault, however. To her shame, America is a global promoter of abortion and consumerism. America is an exporter of pornography and weapons of war. And, America is an importer of illegal drugs and illegal aliens. The list goes on.

As at the Founding, Christians in America have an obligation to help continue to shape the moral character of America, to remind her of her dignity and destiny, and to put a light on her faults and failings. This is especially true of Catholic and Orthodox Christians - who have a Christian tradition that goes back 2,000 years, with Hebrew roots that go back perhaps 4,000 - 6,000 years.

The Catholic Church in the U.S. is especially obliged to help shape the moral character of American society. This is a requirement of our faith. It is not an option. This obligation is shared by each member of the Church according to one's station in life and abilities. "Some question whether it is appropriate for the Church to play a role in political life. However, the obligation to teach about moral values that should shape our lives, including our public lives, is central to the mission given to the Church by Jesus Christ. Moreover, the U.S. Constitution protects the right of individual believers and religious bodies to participate and speak out without government interference, favoritism, or discrimination. (Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, USCCB)"

For more on faithful citizenship, read the column and/or watch the videos under the tab Info Center; Faith in Action; Catholic Action, Faithful Citizenship and other articles that will appear throughout this website.

Throughout this website, Light and Heat Ministries will focus the Light of Truth, whose source is both Revelation and Right Reason, and, where needed most, add the Heat of Righteous Indignation to foster and support Apostolic Action.

In this section of our website, Light and Heat Ministries will develop its primary initiative of proclaiming the Gospel, the Good News (Truth), to America, calling her to Repentance and Rebirth (Spiritually and Morally), and inculcating in her life, as a nation, the Law of Authentic Love and the Principles of Solidarity and Subsidiarity.
