“We have lost sight of the fact that the deepest motivations for America’s founding were religious and spiritual (…) America was born from the Christian mission. This is not an article of faith or a pious wish. It’s historical fact. This nation was discovered as part of the great commission that Jesus Christ gave to his Church – to proclaim his Gospel to every nation (…) The first patents issued to explore the New World don’t speak about searching for gold nor cheap labor or markets for Spanish goods. They speak about evangelization – sharing the “good news” about Jesus Christ. (Archbishop Jose Gomez, Immigration and the Next America).

The patent given to Spanish explorer Lucas Vazquez, who in 1526 established the first permanent settlement in the New World, read as follows. “The principle intent in the discovery of new lands is that the inhabitants and the natives thereof … may be brought to understand the truth of our holy catholic faith, that they may … become Christians and be saved” (op cit).

“This same sense of spiritual expectation is present in Amerigo Vespucci’s writings … He was the first to call these lands Mundus Novus, the ‘New World’ (…) Even Shakespeare was caught up in the excitement: ‘O brave new world, that has such people in it [The Tempest, 1611] (…) The Christian mission to this brave new world was marked by many events that resist our categories of explanation. The greatest of these was the miraculous appearance of the Mother of Jesus Christ [as Our Lady of Guadalupe] on Tepeyec Hill, outside Mexico City, for three days … [1531]” (op cit).

Earlier, in 1502, Christopher Columbus wrote: “God made me the messenger of the new heaven and the new earth of which he spoke in the Apocalypse of St. John … and he showed me the spot where to find it” (Libro de las Profecias).
