The truth about the sovereignty of God over nations and over individual persons was manifesting in America long before it was expressed in the Declaration of Independence. Before recorded history, America was being peopled by immigrants who came seeking freedom from the Tyranny Nature and the Human Tyranny of their “old world.” It is our human nature – as created by God – to hunger and thirst for Freedom! What they found here was a “new world” and a fresh start.

The rest of the immigration story does not begin at places called Jamestown and Plymouth as many may think. Certainly, there was an important wave of immigration in the 1600s which is, primarily, the Anglo-Protestant immigration part of the story. The Anglo-Protestant immigration wave, however, was preceded in the 1400s and 1500s by Spanish and French Catholic missionary migration. And, it is this Catholic part of the story which we must recover if we are to better understand how the sovereignty of God was operative in the making – and is operative in the continuous remaking – of America.

“This [Catholic] period has been remembered much differently by many of those writing in recent years on history and theology. It is remembered mostly as a chronicle of worldly greed and cruel conquest (…) there is a lot of truth in these descriptions. There is no end to the violence and hypocrisy that can be identified at any stage of human history (…) We should feel remorse for these crimes of our history and commit ourselves to learning from them. The problem is that in recent years we have focused too much on documenting victimization and criticizing our ancestors. As a result we have lost a crucial thread to our national story. We have lost sight of the fact that the deepest motivations for America’s founding were religious and spiritual.” (Archbishop Jose Gomez, Immigration and the Next America).
