The war for bringing forth a nation, ever new, conceived in Liberty –under Godcontinues. About the war, Abraham Lincoln said, “It is for us the living … to be here dedicated to the great task remaining … that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom …” (Gettysburg Address).

The task to bring about “a new birth of freedom” “under God” is opposed by an array of formidable hostile forces – some testing the very foundation of our system of national governance in the courts. In June 2011, however, the Supreme Court ended a 7-year battle over the inclusion of the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance “… involving two separate cases, one originating in California and the other in New Hampshire.  The cases were brought forward by [an] atheist … ‘Not surprisingly, the Supreme Court has again rejected the argument that saying the Pledge of your own free will creates an official state religion,’ said attorney Eric Rassbach (litigation director, Becket Fund).

“(…) Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson of the Knights of Columbus, which also played a role … in the cases, pointed out that his organization was ‘instrumental’ in getting the words ‘under God’ added to the pledge in 1954. Those words ‘express a fundamental belief that we have held as a nation since our founding, that we are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights,’ he said. ‘The notion that this somehow violates the First Amendment has now been soundly rejected by both the First and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeal, and the Supreme Court has now allowed both decisions to stand.  It is a victory for common sense’ ” (LifeSiteNews.com).

More legal challenges can be expected, however. Indeed, four Supreme Court decisions (1844 to 1931) have described America as a “Christian Nation” and that empirical fact continues to be challenged.
