The battle of Gettysburg was the turning point in the Civil War. The battle is long over but the war for bringing forth a nation, ever new, conceived in Liberty –under Godcontinues. “The four years of the Civil War were the bloodiest in the nation’s history … Americans fought one another over three fundamental issues: the survival of the Union, the fate of slavery, and the common rights of citizenship – what it means to be an American. The war resolved the first two issues. The nation struggles with the third to this day” [Gettysburg Military Park, Museum and Visitors Center, Exhibit text]. About the war, Abraham Lincoln said, “It is for us the living … to be here dedicated to the great task remaining … that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom …” (Gettysburg Address).

The task to bring about “a new birth of freedom “under God” – so hoped for by Lincoln – requires “good citizenship.”   This task is opposed by array of formidable hostile forces. At the core, these forces feed off of human mental illness, ignorance, apathy, and evil. Is mental illness really a significant factor? “One in 5 American adults aged 18 or older, or 45.6 million people, had mental illness in [2011], according to a report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)” (http://www.samhsa.gov).

And, those among us of sound mind who believe that we exist“under God,” understand that demonic forces are at the root of all evil. Therefore, before we can be “good citizens,” we must be in “good standing” before God – Who is Goodness Itself! For any person, any family and any community any nationto be in good standing before God, that person or social unit must be truly “under God”. It is the right order of all created things to be subordinate to the Creator!
