“… we are engaged in a great civil war … We are met on a great battle-field of that war (…) It is for us … to be here dedicated to the great task remaining … that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom …” (A. Lincoln, Gettysburg Address).“The unprecedented violence of [the Civil War] shocked citizens and international observers alike … Roughly 2% of the population, an estimated 620,000 men, lost their lives … as a percentage of today's population, the toll would have risen as high as 6 million souls” (www.civilwar.org).  In this world, freedom takes its toll in blood.

The battle of Gettysburg is long over but the war for bringing forth a nation conceived in Liberty –under Godcontinues.

What does it mean to be “under God”? For the atheist or agnostic, skeptic or secularist, it can and should mean, at a minimum, acknowledgment of America’s religious history and of the undeniable fact that the nation was founded by persons who believed in a Creator God an empirical statement that poses no threat to the separation of church and state. And, such persons could, should and must, under the Bill of Rights, accept that fact that the rest of us indeed the majority of Americanstake the words “’under God'' to mean that government is not the highest authority in human affairs because ''inalienable rights” can only come from God and God alone. Indeed, America was founded on the notion of “inalienable rights” and the establishment of a nation based on those inseverable rights!   “That which is inalienable cannot be bought, sold, or transferred from one individual to another. The personal rights to life and liberty guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States are inalienable” (freedictionary.com). Indeed the primary purpose of the U.S. government is to preserve, protect – and expandsuch rights!
