With this article, we begin the fourth year of publication of our column, entitled “Catholic Action, Faithful Citizenship.” At the same time, we are at a juncture in American history wherein there is strong evidence of a marked decline in what is, in terms of religion, “catholic” or “universal” – e.g., widespread belief in natural law and moral absolutes.

We are at a juncture wherein there is strong evidence of a marked decline in “faith” in a Creator God and, consequently, in the notion of God-given rights – those natural rights which define and uphold the notion of human dignity – rights that enable the building of a just society, one based on the foundational principles of personalism, solidarity, and subsidiarity.

We are at a juncture wherein there is strong evidence of a marked decline in “citizenship” – especially with regard to individuals who behave in ways that fulfill the duties, obligations, and functions of being a “citizen.”

Hence, we are at a juncture wherein there is strong evidence of a marked decline in citizenship that is faith-based, action-oriented, moral and just.

There may indeed be a marked decline in American culture, yet we are not without cause for hope. This hope must lead us to action. This hope must lead us to inspired action – action similar to that taken by America’s Founders in their rejection of the forces of Anarchy and Tyranny – or what has been called in this column the “Jaws of Death.”

This is nothing less than – or more than – a noble struggle to establish the Culture of Life by overcoming the Culture of Death through Truth, Justice, and Charity (Love). This is a noble struggle to establish the City of God by transforming the City of Man through the God-Power unleashed on the earth through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. To this great mission – The Great Commission – every Christian is called and empowered.
