Volume 3, Part 9

The social, political, and economic issues we face as a nation should be sorted by relative importance – especially by moral and ethical imperative - AND each should be framed in its relevant and true historical context. The primary reason they are "issues" is that we are awash in a fundamental philosophical and psychological battle for the mind, heart, and soul of man and the intellectual and emotional foundation of human cultures – i.e., for centuries, the idea of the inherent rights of man has been losing ground to the idea of the omnipotence and sole authority of the state.

The Magisterium has been sounding the alarm bell about this world-wide transition to totalitarianism, has condemned it, and has called the laity to action in rejecting it and throwing it off. Lay Catholics, who believe that the truth sets us free, must proclaim the truth in the public square and lead their brothers and sisters to freedom. "... the transition toward genuine freedom will be marked by two main trends. First, individuals will have to take a greater responsibility for their lives and become more attached to institutions such as the family or the worship community. Second, the State will have to back away from its overweening role in dominating the economy and the culture and restrict its role to suit its nature as an apparatus of law enforcement and an exactor of justice. The relationship between the two trends is one of mutual reinforcement."

"A society must have a sense of direction. The question is whether this sense of direction is owed to moral formation, self-governance, internal spiritual discipline, and a right intellectual understanding of the human person, or whether this sense of direction is going to be imposed from the outside via political constraints. (Rev. Robert A. Sirico, Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty)."
